Long time member of Trinity East UMC in Houston, and retired teacher Alyce Christian believes education opens doors. She remembers the struggle her family had putting her through college, and the challenges she faced putting her two kids through school. Alyce wanted to create scholarships to help others as a way to honor the memory of those who helped her. In 1985, she worked with Heartspring to setup her first scholarship fund in memory of her mother. Over the past 25 years, she has partnered with Heartspring to endow three scholarships that have helped some 50 students go to college.
"I said, Lord just help me to help somebody else," she recalls. "And I've done it. And I just feel so good inside. It's like a whole new world opening up?because I know what it means to get an education."
Her daughter Melva is following in her footsteps and now helps to fund the scholarships. She commends Heartspring for helping grow her dollars so they could do even more over the years.
Christian says you don't have to be rich to make a difference. "With Heartspring's help, I've been able to do a lot with my money to give a helping hand to students who want to learn and grow."
